Lola Baert
Lola Baert is an artist from Brussels, recently graduated from a Bachelor in Fine Art Sculpture at Camberwell College of Arts, University of the Arts London.
Her practice situates itself around - abstract - emotions and feelings. Lola tries to visualise certain emotions or feelings through various materials in a conceptual way. Most often these materials are stoneware ceramics, found objects and text. In almost each of her works there is a confrontation present, either between the materials used in the work or between the object and the viewer.
Emotion is a crucial part of any artwork and is often overlooked because it is so self-evidently considered to be a part of it. The sense of emotions being generated by an art object develops a new understanding of the work. It invites the audience to be emotionally engaged and subjectively involved in the work.
This emotion and experience massively influences Lola’s choice of materials, form and even choice of the title for the work. There is no obvious narrative shape like a human face expressing a certain action. The audience has to guess what the work is about through these materials and other elements.
Mostly, depending on the project, the chosen emotion or feeling is analysed in-depth and starts to take shape slowly. This interpretation then continues to develop into a thoroughly analysed emotion or feeling and forms the base for a bigger project.
There is a great importance in not only what is being communicated with the work, but also what message is received by the audience. Lola’s aim is to tell her own personal story and at the same time let the piece tell someone else their own story and give them a personal, unique experience.
